Burst Main or Blocked Drain Kingston | How to Tell

You walk out of your front door on Clarence Street and there's water sitting on the pavement. Or you get a call from your tenant in Norbiton saying there's a puddle forming in the back yard that won't go away. Your first question is always the same: is this a burst pipe or a blocked drain?

Get it wrong and you call the wrong people. You lose time and money, and the problem doesn't go away.

I've been pulling apart drains in KT1 and KT2 for long enough to know these two problems get confused constantly. Let me give you the quick way to separate them.

What a Burst Water Main Actually Looks Like

A burst main, or a burst supply pipe on your property, brings clean water up from below. That's the tell. It's not stale or smelly. The water is clear.

Other signs:

• Wet patches on dry days, especially in the road or near the pavement edge
• Your water pressure suddenly drops or disappears inside the house
• You can hear running water when every tap is off
• The wet area grows steadily, even in dry weather
• Your water meter is spinning when nothing is in use

If it's on the private pipework inside your boundary, that's yours. Thames Water won't touch it. You need a plumber.

I had a call last month from a landlord on Richmond Road who was convinced he had a blocked drain because his front path was soaking. Turned out his supply pipe had cracked under the path. Not a drain job at all. He'd have wasted his money calling us first.

What a Blocked or Damaged Drain Looks Like

A blocked or broken drain brings dirty water back up or lets it escape where it shouldn't. The clues are different.

• Water that smells. Drains carry foul water. If it stinks, it's almost certainly drainage.
• Slow or backed-up sinks, toilets, and baths inside the property
• Gurgling sounds from plugholes or toilets when you run water elsewhere
• Wet patches in the garden that smell wrong, especially after rain or after using a lot of water indoors
• Manhole covers that are pushed up or overflowing with water
• Dark or discoloured water on the surface, not clear

In a tight street like parts of Kingston Town Centre or around the Canbury Gardens area, collapsed drains under old Victorian brickwork are common. The pipe breaks, groundwater gets in, sewage gets out. You won't see it immediately, but the signs above will start stacking up.

The One Test That Settles Most Arguments

Flush a toilet or run your kitchen tap hard for thirty seconds. Watch the manhole cover in your garden if you can access it.

Water rising in the manhole? That's a drainage problem.

Manhole stays dry but your path is still wet? More likely a burst supply pipe.

When It Could Be Both

Occasionally, yes, I've seen it. A cracked drain collapses and undermines a nearby supply pipe. Or a burst main erodes the bedding around an old clay drain and breaks it. Old properties in Hampton Wick and around Kingston Hill can have decades of patched-up infrastructure under them. One failure can trigger another.

If you're getting clear water pooling and dirty water backing up, don't assume. Get a camera survey done before anyone starts digging.
