Who's responsible for the blocked drain, me or the water company?

If the blockage is inside your property boundary, it's yours to sort. Drains that are shared between two or more properties and run outside the boundary are usually Thames Water's responsibility under the 2011 sewerage transfer. Do I need a CCTV survey every time you clear a blockage?

Not at all. If jetting clears the drain and flow tests confirm the system's running correctly, a survey isn't necessary. For external drains, gullies and manholes, we lift covers, rod or jet as required, and check flow through the full run. If there's standing water in a manhole or the level's high before jetting, that tells us something about the system further downstream.

Where jetting clears the blockage but we can't confirm the cause, we'll discuss a CCTV drain survey with you. A camera passed through the pipe shows us exactly what's going on inside, whether that's a partial root ingress, a cracked joint collecting debris, or a belly in the pipe that'll always hold water. You won't be sold a survey you don't need, but if the pipe's failed internally, pushing the blockage clear won't be the end of it.
